Nevada Dreaming

Postby jonathan knight » Thu Jun 30, 2011 11:25 pm

I was lucky enough to have some work over in the Big Smokey valley a couple of weeks ago. On the east slope of the Toiyabe's the Wild Granites have to be one of the larger chunks of stone in the Great Basin.

I had to get a bunch of field work finished to help facilitate this kind of thing:

We were done early on our last day, so I had a chance to do some hiking on my own time. Once you find the right road, it's pretty easy to get into the climbers' camp. You'll know you are in the right place when you see a picnic table and the topo nailed to a pine.

Image

It's a pretty nice hike in, but to get up to the business, it's easily 1.5 -2 hours.

Been seeing a lot of Gopher snakes lately.

There are some interesting boulders out there, although the rock is a bit grainy in places:

It looks better up on the walls.

That's all I've got, but it's a cool place to have on your radar if you're heading to the Sierra via Hwy 50.

Rock porn.

!!!!!
Looks like a peaceful place too.

Nothing like a little isolated paradise. I like those.

WOW! Thanks for the inspiration! That place looks really cool. What is the elevation? Climbable in July August?

What's the first rule of fight club? Ha ha.

Area has been quietly explored and talked about in hush hush since the 50's or 60's.

Only drivin' by and drooled from a distance. Be fun to do a 3 or 4 day trip in there.

Rumor has all the obvious lines already done.

Nice close ups of some of the rock, there, JK.

I don't know anything else about the area. I was just doing a little recon, but I'll go directly to the Great Orange and climb something when I get the chance.

The rumor on MP.com was that all the access to Pequop was shut off, which was the case when we tried to access the area from the pass and from the exit to the West.

Luckily, the old gate at the bottom of the grade is still an option. Some of the chunked up asphalt has been used to fill up the trench in front of the old gate which even has a lever bar installed. It's probably the work of the rancher that doesn't want his other gates thrashed? Anyway, the original access is viable for the time being, and it was passable for a late model subaru legacy. A little more American ingenuity and you might get a Sprinter in there.

It was too bitter for camping, but rooms are kinda cheap in Wells. Twelve Mile hot springs is that far north of town right next to Bishop Creek.

The nearby ruins of Metropolis are worth checking out.

Thanks to whoever cleaned up the first pitch of that old, run out 5.10 that I added bolts to a couple weeks ago. It was nice to go back and climb it with clean holds and less pucker...
