This year we will welcome world renowned climber Peter Croft! Royal Robbins, a leading climber of the previous generation, wrote about Croft and his climbing achievements in 2000: "Peter has been my hero for many years, ever since he came blazing out of nowhere with his stunning free solo ascent of Astroman on Washington Column in Yosemite. Tom Frost and I had made the second ascent of this route, mostly with direct aid in the early sixties. That one could climb this route without resorting to direct aid was impressive. To do it without a rope was astonishing. But such was Peter's level of mastery. That it was mastery, and not mere daring was proven by a string of free solos of similar stature, executed to perfection."

This years Festival will include:

Calling all climbers! The SLCA would like to announce our annual Adopt-A-Crag Day, to be held October 22nd from Noon-5pm (after the Black Diamond Gear Swap.) Volunteers will be meeting at the Little Cottonwood Park-And-Ride, please car-pool if possible. The plan for the afternoon is to do a trash clean up of Little Cottonwood and maintenance of our past projects at The Slips and Ferguson Canyon. Please come out and show your good stewardship of the Wasatch. Refreshments and giveaways at 5pm back at the Park-And-Ride. If you plan on attending please complete the following volunteer registration so we have an idea of how many climbers are willing to help us with our goal of preserving access and stewardship of our local climbing areas.

Sign-up here: http://www.saltlakeclimbers.org/volunteer

Created by the Access Fund, the Adopt-a-Crag program is our signature stewardship event. It exists to unite our climbing community in partnership with land managers to conserve climbing areas.

Our volunteers should be prepared for mountain weather conditions, which are unpredictable and subject to rapid change. Further, our projects require the use of tools, which should be accompanied by a certain type of attire for your safety and that of others around you. Listed below are items to wear or bring to ensure your volunteer experience is a positive one.

Required:

Long Pants

Boots (sturdiest shoes possible, with closed-toe, no sandals!)

Sunglasses or other eye protection

Food / Water (2 – 3 quarts)

Leather Gloves

Suggested:

Sunscreen

Rain gear

Hat

Extra layers

Be prepared for arduous work lasting up to 4 hours. All personal items must be carried by each individual in a backpack. If you pack it in, please pack it out. Also, dehydration is a real concern during the summer months. Please bring enough water to last the entire length of service. Please also note that most work on trails takes place at high elevations. Please come prepared with an Epi pen if you are allergic to stings, and please also notify work leaders of any special health or medical considerations when you arrive on site.

Also, thank you to everyone who came out for the Reel Rock Tour and also welcome to our new members!

Despite “no trespassing” signs climbers have been observed crossing the creek on the pipe at the traditional (pumphouse) parking for the Pentapitch/Coalpit areas. This pipe crossing is dangerous and a slip could be fatal. This area is privately owned and the SLCA has a positive relationship with the landowner. <del datetime="2011-06-16T17:28:33+00:00">Help us continue this amicable partnership by accessing these areas from the pullout near Lisa Falls, it is located .9 miles up-canyon from the pumphouse and 2.5 miles from the park-and-ride.</del> We have recently learned the bridge near Lisa Falls is closed and likely the entire trail on the south side of the creek. We will update our web site when we get confirmation. Sorry for the confusion.

Down-canyon, the bridge leading to the south side near the Buzz bouldering area has been condemned by the Forest Service. Signs have been posted promising fines for tresspassers. We ask that you obey these signs and find an alternate route to your destination.

From the website:

It’s our responsibility to protect the area that we all love and enjoy. Come out and give something back to Moe’s Valley.

With increased traffic, it is naive to ignore the increased impact we are having on this amazing place. It is our responsibility to mitigate this impact by raising public awareness, building new trails, and cleaning up the trash.
Moe’s Valley is being annexed into the City of St. George. We must be responsible stewards of the area, and cultivate a positive public image to retain access.

On Friday, September 17th, a homemade bomb was discovered in an latrine near campsite number six. The device was placed next to and behind the toilet seat. The local rangers and sheriff are investigating. No word yet on motives or the destructive capacity of the device. Based on what little information we have received it sounds like the device was an “acid bomb”. Instructions for making these bombs are common on the Internet. Luckily, the Maple Canyon rangers cleaning the latrine had been educated on the existence of these devices and identified the threat. A hazardous materials team safely removed the device.

These bottle bombs can be any size sealed plastic or glass bottle and often have aluminum foil or handwarmers inside to catalyze a chemical reaction. Generally they must be shaken or agitated to explode.

If you see a suspicious device:

Do not disturb the device

Keep your distance

Attempt to keep others out of the area

Contact the Sanpete County Sheriff at 435-835-2345

Contact the Sanpete Ranger District at 435-283-4151

 Be safe out there!
