Libecki"To the Ends of the Earth"
Explorer's Presentation Benefit for Utah Environmental Congress
Thursday, April 23, 7:00pm
Brewvie's Cinema Pub

Mike Libecki, internationally famed explorer, will present slides and films from his adventures in a benefit for the Utah Environmental Congress on Thursday, April 23, at 7:00pm at Brewvies Cinema Pub.

Libecki's presentation, "To the Ends of the Earth," focuses on exploring absolute virgin Earth while seeking first ascents on big walls around the world, both completely alone and with partners. We will visit places from very different parts of the planet, like Venezuela to climb first ascents on the Tepuis in the Gran Sabana, Western China to climb first ascents on giant granite rock faces that are on the boarder of Kyrgyzstan and China, and Greenland to explore untouched fjords that are home to some of the largest unclimbed rock towers on the planet.

Admission is $5 to benefit the Utah Environmental Congress, Utah's only organization working to protect all six national forests in Utah. Ages 21 and older with ID. For more information, call the Utah Environmental Congress at 801-466-4055.

Fight For Utah Wilderness – SUWA Benefit

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

SUWA poster

SUWA Fundraiser
Friday, December 12 @ 8pm
Momentum Climbing Gym

Momentum Climbing gym is hosting a fundraiser for SUWA this Friday from 8-12pm. Music and entertainment will be provided. Climbing from 8-10 is $15 – $5 of that goes to SUWA. The silent auction is from 10-11:30ish – entrance fee is $5 (which also goes to SUWA).

There will be climbing, a silent auction, art, free stuff, and a chance to participate in Visual Cacophony’s community art protest to tell the BLM and the Bush Administration to keep oil and gas drilling away from our wild lands. The BLM pulled a few parcels from the land auction–but not permanently.

Also, if you can, bring a piece of art, no matter how small or large, that shows how you feel about Southern Utah, or Utah land in general, and we will deliver it to the BLM as a protest. Or bring an art project that we can all participate in.

For more information about the land sale, click here.

Help needed for SLCA crag day preparations, Thursday October 9th

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

When: Thursday, October 9th
Time: 8-9 AM until it’s done
Where: Little Cottonwood, WMC Pavilion, the swamp

The SLCA needs your help!

The WMC pavilion at the bog needs graffiti removal and general clean-up so that it can be used for the raffle and after-party for the SLCA crag day on Saturday.

I have committed to the SLCA that people that participate here and climb in LCC will help out. Again, it is time to step it up and participate!

Jonathan, Mike (monkey), and Clay (tenesmus) have volunteered so far. The more volunteers the better. Help make the crag day a successful event.

The bog boulder area always needs help, and the shack too. The landowner of the pavilion (and a lot more LCC land) has been friendly to climbers and this will help keep the SLCA and climbers credible in his eyes.

We need a minimum of 10 people……

2008 SLCA Adopt-A-Crag Day

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008

Little Cottonwood Canyon

The Salt Lake Climbers’ Alliance, in conjunction with the Access Fund, is organizing an Adopt-a-Crag Day on Saturday, October 11 in Little Cottonwood Canyon. This year we’ve gotten permission from the Forest Service to build a new trail leading to the Egg, which will eventually serve to access the Hong Wall and The Coffin (see map). The current disorganized network of social trails is causing undue erosion and impact in this fragile mountain environment. By building this new trail, we hope to mitigate climber impact and provide easy access to these popular crags, which include such classic routes as Lego My Ego, Low Blow, Tick Fever, the Coffin and the Coffin Roof.

To make this happen, we really need your help. We need as many volunteers as possible to pitch-in. This is your chance to contribute to your climbing areas and your community. Even if you can only come for a few hours, your help would be greatly appreciated.

During lunch break we’ll be raffling off gear and prizes donated by our sponsors, which include Petzl, Liberty Mountain and ProBar (more will be announced later on-stay tuned!). And after a long, fun day of hard work we’ll have an after-party at the Pavilion, located higher in the canyon (special thanks to Jim Williams of Williams Realty for use of the venue).

Here’s the important info:

Meet at 8am at the Park-and-Ride at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon (coffee and a light breakfast will be provided). We’ll carpool up to the work site.

Be sure to wear appropriate attire, such as work boots and be prepared for inclement weather. Work gloves are advised. We’ll have tools there, but if you have shovels and other tools, that would be helpful.

Jennifer Lowe-Anker and Forget Me Not

Friday, September 5th, 2008

From an email:

Time: Tuesday, September 9, 2008, 7:00 p.m.
Location: Black Diamond Retail Store

The King’s English and Black Diamond present Jennifer Lowe-Anker, reading
and signing her new book on her husband, Alex Lowe, and their lives as
mountaineers, Forget Me Not.

Forget Me Not: High in the Himalaya, a world-class adventurer dies, leaving
a wife, three young sons and a best friend to cope with their grief… In
1999, well-known mountaineer, Alex Lowe, died in an avalanche on the remote
Himalayan Mountain Shishapangma, leaving his wife Jennifer alone to raise
their three children. Alex was widely considered one of the greatest modern
climbers of our time, and the world mourned his loss. Tom Brokaw interviewed
Jenni Lowe for Dateline, and Sting narrated and composed music for a tribute
film, The Endless Knot. Jenni’s account takes readers inside a woman’s heart
and mind as she navigates her shattered life and survives, ultimately
finding transformative love through loss. From the valleys of Montana to the
peaks of the Himalayas, this is the story of growing up, falling in love,
finding adventure, rejoicing in parenthood, living through heartbreak, and
believing in possibility.
