It’s time for the unofficial precursor to the ski season in the Wasatch – Black Diamond’s 17th Annual Fundraiser for the Utah Avalanche Center.

Join Black Diamond, Uinta Brewing Company, Redwood Creek Wines and the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center for our annual pre-season fundraiser bash complete with Mexican food, beer & wine, the live tunes of Herban Empire, good people and a great cause. There will also be the legendary silent auction to support the UAC and hook you up with gear as well as grand giveaways for those who purchase an advance ticket.

HERA Climb4Life Utah is an incredible weekend of hiking and climbing in beautiful Salt Lake Valley with professional athletes and guides, as well as others like you who support ovarian cancer research and awareness initiatives.

So far, HERA has been able to send over 85 percent of the money from Climb4Life events to scientific and community grants as well as awareness initiatives.

At 7:00pm on July 15, Piolets d’Or winners Kyle Dempster and Bruce Normand will present a slide show on their climb in China’s Middle Kingdom. Dempster, Normand, and Jed Brown did the first ascent of Xuelian West (6,422m). The three men completed an alpine-style ascent of the 2,650-meter north face during a five-day round trip. Their route, the Great White Jade Heist, went at M6 WI5 5.7 R. Xuelian West is a satellite of 6,627-meter Xuelian, which has only been climbed once.

In the last two winters The Big LePowSki Freeride Happening was such a great success that we decided to let other freeride hotspots enjoy the fame as well.

Apart from our “Homebase” Davos  there will be The Big LePowSki Freeride Happenings in La Grave (France), St. Anton (Austria) and Brighton (USA).

Description: Momentum is proud to present Pat Ament’s latest creation “Disciples of Gill.” And to celebrate, you know we HAVE to hold a bouldering comp!!!

Pat’s vision, however, has not been simply to preserve the critical footage but also build a new film around it. His efforts have resulted in a gorgeous, nostalgic piece that remembers the golden age of bouldering and chronicles its development and central characters. Featured are all the original, most significant pioneers of bouldering and the true disciples of Gill. Barry Bates, for example, the best California boulderer in the later 1960’s, known for his exploits in Yosemite and at Pinnacles, and known also for his quiet, genial spirit, has never until now been interviewed. His lovely insights are invaluable. Also legendary Greg Lowe, the remarkable Utah master boulderer and climber, has not until now been interviewed. He and Gill sit together and muse about time and its passing. Included are commentaries by Jim Holloway himself, Rich Goldstone, a disciple of Gill’s, and Jeff Lowe. Ament also, another partner to Gill and Colorado’s best boulderer during the golden age, provides a humble portrayal of his own bouldering exploits.

Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort and the Utah Avalanche Center (UAC) are partnering to offer the first annual Freeride Avalanche Summit, Dec. 17-18. The two-day clinic targets advance and expert skiers and riders who want practical and professional instruction on avalanche awareness, safety and rescue.

The Freeride Avalanche Summit will include a unique blend of instruction that combines the expertise of industry leading avalanche forecasters with the experience and influence of local, professional athletes.

Eddie Bauer’s First Ascent Guide and Legendary Mountaineer Ed Viesturs will speak on Mountaineering at MountainFilm On Tour in Salt Lake City. Viesturs was the first American and 5th person in the world to summit all 14 of the world’s highest peaks without use of supplemental oxygen. He just released a new book – K2: Life and Death on the World’s Most Dangerous Mountain.

It’s that time of year when all the freaks come out at night!!! This year we have teamed up with Momentum and we are having a Dual Comp Series. Join us Friday, October 30 at The Front for our annual Deadpoint competition and then on Saturday, October 31 at Momentum. Festivities begin at The Front Climbing Club with check-in Friday night at 5:30pm and climbing from 6-8:30pm. Saturday wake up put on your costume and grab a monster energy drink and head down south to Momentum where the comp begins at 10am.

So, get dressed, have some fun, and pull down Friday night and Saturday and kick start your Halloween weekend. It will be a howling good time!!!

Coming off the heels of last year’s well-attended event, USAW is the venue where Utah’s snow and avalanche community can share local knowledge and history. This visionary seminar at an affordable price, taps into the vast amount of avalanche knowledge we have here in the state among our own local avalanche community.

The format will be much like a mini ISSW – presentations are 15 minutes with a 5 minute Q and A.

Please join Steve House for a free one-hour slide presentation through his new book, Beyond the Mountain on Wednesday, September 2, at the Black Diamond Store. Admission is free.  Steve will share stories from landmark climbs such as Slovak Direct and the Central Pillar of the Rupal Face as well as dish on several of his less-glamorous attempts at climbing, and living as a climber, over the past twenty years. On June 13, 2009, the SLCA will be sponsoring another mini-project in LCC to tackle grafitti removal at the vandalized Beer Can Cave boulder, along with a much needed trail maintenance project on the access trail to the Syringe Boulder and some touch-up work on the Egg Trail. The main goal is to clean up the Beer Can Cave Boulder and any other graffiti around the park and ride, and get some check dams built on the access trail to mitigate the erosion.  We will be meeting at the LCC Park and Ride at 7:00 am and will go probably all day or until the main projects are completed.  We need volunteers!

Work will be performed on various climber trails and on the landings at the base of some of the heavily-used climbing areas.

Work will commence at 7:00am to beat the heat; another shift will start at 9:00am. However, late-risers are welcome at anytime.

Donations of materials such as landscaping timbers, wire fencing (for gabions), fence posts, etc. would be helpful, so if you have anything, or know of someone who has unused materials they would be willing to donate please contact Jim Knight or Perin Blanchard via mountainproject.com.

Mike Libecki, internationally famed explorer, will present slides and films from his adventures in a benefit for the Utah Environmental Congress on Thursday, April 23, at 7:00pm at Brewvies Cinema Pub.

Libecki's presentation, "To the Ends of the Earth," focuses on exploring absolute virgin Earth while seeking first ascents on big walls around the world, both completely alone and with partners. We will visit places from very different parts of the planet, like Venezuela to climb first ascents on the Tepuis in the Gran Sabana, Western China to climb first ascents on giant granite rock faces that are on the boarder of Kyrgyzstan and China, and Greenland to explore untouched fjords that are home to some of the largest unclimbed rock towers on the planet.

Admission is $5 to benefit the Utah Environmental Congress, Utah's only organization working to protect all six national forests in Utah. Ages 21 and older with ID. For more information, call the Utah Environmental Congress at 801-466-4055.
