The SLCA needs your help!

The WMC pavilion at the bog needs graffiti removal and general clean-up so that it can be used for the raffle and after-party for the SLCA crag day on Saturday.

I have committed to the SLCA that people that participate here and climb in LCC will help out. Again, it is time to step it up and participate!

Jonathan, Mike (monkey), and Clay (tenesmus) have volunteered so far. The more volunteers the better. Help make the crag day a successful event.

The bog boulder area always needs help, and the shack too. The landowner of the pavilion (and a lot more LCC land) has been friendly to climbers and this will help keep the SLCA and climbers credible in his eyes.

We need a minimum of 10 people……

Joe's Valley has become one of the premier bouldering areas in the American West. With this popularity has come increased impact on the natural environment and has also placed strain on the relationships between land owners, climbers, and other user groups. The Salt Lake Climbers' Alliance, with the help of its donors, has installed latrines at the Mansize and Buoux camping areas. The use of these latrines will help keep campsites enjoyable and also minimize our impact in the area. Latrines will be installed seasonally, depending on donations. The Salt Lake Climbers’ Alliance, in conjunction with the Access Fund, is organizing an Adopt-a-Crag Day on Saturday, October 11 in Little Cottonwood Canyon. This year we’ve gotten permission from the Forest Service to build a new trail leading to the Egg, which will eventually serve to access the Hong Wall and The Coffin (see map). The current disorganized network of social trails is causing undue erosion and impact in this fragile mountain environment. By building this new trail, we hope to mitigate climber impact and provide easy access to these popular crags, which include such classic routes as Lego My Ego, Low Blow, Tick Fever, the Coffin and the Coffin Roof.

To make this happen, we really need your help. We need as many volunteers as possible to pitch-in. This is your chance to contribute to your climbing areas and your community. Even if you can only come for a few hours, your help would be greatly appreciated.

During lunch break we’ll be raffling off gear and prizes donated by our sponsors, which include Petzl, Liberty Mountain and ProBar (more will be announced later on-stay tuned!). And after a long, fun day of hard work we’ll have an after-party at the Pavilion, located higher in the canyon (special thanks to Jim Williams of Williams Realty for use of the venue).

Here’s the important info:

Meet at 8am at the Park-and-Ride at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon (coffee and a light breakfast will be provided). We’ll carpool up to the work site.

Be sure to wear appropriate attire, such as work boots and be prepared for inclement weather. Work gloves are advised. We’ll have tools there, but if you have shovels and other tools, that would be helpful.

For anyone that is interested and has a chance to stop by this evening, there is a public, open house concerning this ongoing planning effort for the canyons. If you are concerned about the future of the canyons, check it out and give some feedback.

The Salt Lake Climbers’ Alliance (SLCA) is pleased to announce that the next local Adopt-a-Crag Day will take place on October 20, 2007 in lower Little Cottonwood Canyon (LCC). Working with the Wasatch Cache National Forest Salt Lake District and the Access Fund, we will be focusing on improving and cleaning up the climbing areas and trail network from lower LCC and all the way up to White Pine. The event is being sponsored by The Front Climbing Club and Momentum Climbing LLC. Additional sponsorship by Revolution, Black Diamond, Petzl, Backcountry.com, Exum, ProBar and Solid Rock.

Adopt-A-Crag Day is part of a national effort promoted by the Access Fund which unites local climbing communities, encourages partnerships with local land managers and landowners towards the conservation of climbing areas.

This year’s Adopt-a-Cray Day marks the first of several future projects that will focus on climbing infrastructure improvement in LCC. These projects will not only benefit climbers, but all groups that enjoy the LCC trails and open space.

Projects for this year’s event tentatively include:

• Trail improvement and slope re-vegetation at the park and ride
• Trail improvement around the Pipeline trail
• General, area clean-up
• Restoration of the bridge leading to the Pentapitch area, Great White Icicle and the Hidden Forest area
• Graffiti removal in various areas in the canyon
• Replacing old climbing hardware

Volunteers are needed to help make this event a success. This is your chance to give back to this important climbing resource and help make it a better place. This event will help the climbing community self manage public resources; build good-will with land owners, managers, and other user groups as well as strengthen the climbing community.

The work will be organized in two shifts, from 8am to noon and from 1 to 5pm. Snacks and drinks will be provided and there will be a raffle/give-away with tons of great prizes from our sponsors.

• Meet at the park and ride at the base of LCC at 8 am for the morning shift.
• Meet at the park and ride at noon for a lunch break.
• Meet at the park and ride at 1 pm for the afternoon shift.

Volunteers should dress appropriately (long pants and sturdy boots are recommended) and they should bring their own water. Please car pool as there is limited parking in the canyon.

The SLCA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer run organization which exists to promote climbing opportunities, preserve local access and encourage stewardship of the environment.

The Access Fund is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to keeping climbing areas open and conserving the climbing environment. Preserving the opportunity to climb and the diversity of the climbing experience are fundamental to the mission of the Access Fund.

As you are aware, the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance is an Access Fund Affiliate. The goal of this relationship is to strengthen the climbing community and the collective voice of climbers across the United States.

I just spoke to the President of the mining company, LiveEarth, and Russell Taylor, the person who first contacted Gorilla regarding Triassic. They are really nice guys, and are willing to continue to allow access out at Triassic. Their company mines humic acid, used for fertilizer and other products. From the sound of it the mining will not interfere with any of the climbing, as they are not interested in any areas where there is rock. I am going down next week to meet with them and figure out exactly where they will be mining, where we should start parking, etc. The main thing they are concerned about is liability and damage to their equipment. While under Utah law they are essentially shielded from liability with respect to any injuries on their property, they were somewhat concerned about “monkey wrench” tactics used on their equipment. We need to make sure and get the word out that any of this type of behavior from the climbing community would seriously threaten access to the area and is unacceptable.

I will update the site on any further developments, particularly after I go meet with them next week. In the meantime, please try and get the word out as far as what is happening down there so no problems arise while we try and negotiate this delicate situation.
